Yet even as communities face devastation, life goes on. Pregnancies continue, and women and gender diverse people go into labour and give birth. A moment that should be joyful and safe turns frightening and uncertain, as giving birth becomes far more dangerous and unpredictable. More than half of maternal deaths worldwide occur in fragile and crisis-affected settings, making clear just how deadly these situations can be.

At the same time, needs rise sharply. The demand for contraception, comprehensive abortion care and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) increases, while access to these services often becomes limited or disappears entirely. Menstrual hygiene becomes harder to manage as products and safe facilities, including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, become scarce. Unintended pregnancies and STIs increase due to the lack of barrier methods and heightened risk of sexual violence.]]>

Humanitarian crises are prevalent here, and the occurrence of extreme weather events is likely to increase due to the climate crisis as the sea levels rise and regularly flood coastal homes. Preparedness is key for the local communities. IPPF’s Member Association, the Kiribati Family Health Association (KFHA) has created a Humanitarian Youth Club. They meet regularly to plan rapid responses for their communities during a disaster. ]]> https://www.girlsglobe.org/2020/07/02/how-young-people-tackle-the-climate-crisis-threatening-their-pacific-island/feed/ 1 56335 Is the Climate Movement too White? https://www.girlsglobe.org/2020/03/30/is-the-climate-movement-too-white/ https://www.girlsglobe.org/2020/03/30/is-the-climate-movement-too-white/#respond Mon, 30 Mar 2020 10:34:39 +0000 https://www.girlsglobe.org/?p=53180 Is the Climate Change Movement Too White? By Chante Moos for Girls' GlobeI believe it is important to highlight the work of black and brown girls in the climate change movement. They have to endure multiple forms of discrimination in society. But intersectionality is not as simple as suddenly featuring more minorities in the media so that the aesthetics do not look so bad. It's about listening to activists' concerns and giving diverse voices the opportunity to lead as well. This counts for all movements.
