She was a part of the crew of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla's boat Madleen, which attempted to break Israel's illegal blockade on the occupied Gaza Strip to supply humanitarian aid.

Since the ceasefire collapsed in Gaza, Israeli forces have escalated their attack, killing and injuring tens of thousands of civilians. The UN estimates that over 640,000 have been forcibly displaced, with people confined to an ever-shrinking space.

Israel has previously attacked boats part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and intercepted the Madleen on international waters and detained its crew earlier this week.

Greta explained that she's most worried about the continued development of the crisis in Gaza, the crimes against humanity that we're witnessing and the war crimes that Israel is guilty of. ]]>

Gender equality and the rights of women and girls are facing growing threats at unprecedented levels.

In a world where we're seeing the rise of authoritarianism, the power of big tech and AI, we're also witnessing the simultaneous rise of threats against women's and girls' rights.

These threats include higher levels of discrimination, weaker legal protections, less funding for programs and institutions that support and protect women. Global crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency, conflicts and soaring prices, make the urgency to respond to these threats even greater.]]>

It has seen itself as a light in the world for upholding justice, solidarity and equality.

Yet, time and time again, the actions of the European Union don't match the words they put on paper. And recently, we're seeing more examples of EU decisions that contradict its own treaties.

EU's hypocrisy can be seen in the human rights abuses it funds in other countries, it's crackdown on minority rights within member states or through its inaction for our shared climate.

This post details one of these hypocrisies and shares examples of others.

The European elections, taking place later this week, are important to take a stand for humanity and to turn the tide of European hypocrisy.

Therefore, we must understand which parties and members of European Parliament are willing to break the cycle of EU's hypocrisy.

Several international expert organizations and human rights and advocacy networks have conducted research to help us do so. ]]>

Cover photo for post on Feminist Solidarity. It's been two month since Hamas attack on the south of Israel. The following bombardment by Israel on Gaza has led to a global outcry for ceasefire and a free Palestine.

Feminist movements around the world join these calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

Simultaneously, social media feeds are beginning to reflect news from the massacres in Sudan, massive exploitation in the Congo, and the fossil fuel lobbyists present at COP28.

The world is waking up to the injustice caused by centuries of colonisation, occupation, slavery and capitalist exploitation.

Yet, polarisation and misinformation can hinder the important reckoning needed.

Further, feminist solidarity is being questioned from within movements and attacked by external forces like media and institutions.

"Every war is a war against children", said Eglantyne Jebb, founder of Save the Children, 100 years ago.

Children and young people are brutally affected by the terror of war, conflicts and other humanitarian disasters.

On this World Mental Health Day, we must recognize the impact of human-made disasters on children and young people.

Whether from armed conflict or natural disasters due to the climate crisis, young people often endure unthinkable distress.

Children and young people are deeply affected by war and crises. The mental health burden that they bare is still difficult to comprehend, and research is only uncovering the surface of a global mental health crisis. With this in mind, we must let compassion lead. Polarization and divisiveness serves no purpose in improving mental health outcomes for young people.

So, how will you let compassion lead you to take action today?

In this post there are 5 actions you can take now to be a part of the solution for young people's mental health. ]]>

The World is Failing at Gender Equality: Here’s What We Can Do About It https://www.girlsglobe.org/2023/09/11/the-world-is-failing-at-gender-equality-heres-what-we-can-do-about-it/ https://www.girlsglobe.org/2023/09/11/the-world-is-failing-at-gender-equality-heres-what-we-can-do-about-it/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2023 11:42:57 +0000 https://www.girlsglobe.org/?p=64414 An illustration of women building positive movements of change for gender equality.

A new UN report, "Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2023," exposes the world's shortcomings in achieving gender equality and women's empowerment. The report calls for immediate action, highlighting the need for an additional $360 billion annually to bridge the gap.

Despite global efforts, the world is falling short of achieving gender equality.

The UN report sounds a critical alarm. Immediate action, collaboration, and increased investment are essential to ensure a world where every woman and girl enjoys equal rights and opportunities.

Several crises are exacerbating inequality. Anti-rights movements are gaining ground and digital spaces are used to fuel discrimination. That's why action, collaboration and increased investment becomes ever more urgent!

Girls' Globe is a global feminist media platform that amplifies the voices of changemakers for gender equality, human rights, social justice and sustainability. We know that this platform is more important than ever. Feminist activists, advocates, experts and organizations need to be heard to inspire the action, collaboration and investment that's needed. We must ensure that the world does better.

We're kicking out hopelessness and amplifying your impact instead!

This post includes 14 things you can do to be a part of the global movement for gender equality.

Young people today have grown up with digital tools at their fingertips. We've yet to understand how their lives have been and will be impacted by the digital world.

The digital development has gone faster than any country's legal protections of digital rights. We're only catching up - which is why we must trust young people to lead on protecting and promoting digital rights.

But, first - what are digital rights?

And what challenges are there to protecting digital rights today?

What are the perspectives of young people and feminist movement builders?

It's feared that 650 people's lives have been lost in the shipwreck, and among those 100 children. Despite knowing that the ship was in distress, Greek authorities ignored alarms made.

Despite Julia's quite dystopian last post about the harms of social media, she is a strong advocate for using digital tools to strengthen feminist movement building around the world.
Yet, as the harms of social media can outweigh the benefits at times, she want us to be inspired by approaches that go beyond building a social media following.
Read about why social media might not be the best tool for your activism or advocacy work.
And learn from organizations and platforms that are building and strengthening feminist movements online - without social media as their main platform.

Can you be a feminist and STILL use social media? https://www.girlsglobe.org/2023/05/12/can-you-be-a-feminist-and-still-use-social-media/ https://www.girlsglobe.org/2023/05/12/can-you-be-a-feminist-and-still-use-social-media/#respond Fri, 12 May 2023 09:11:35 +0000 https://www.girlsglobe.org/?p=63538 Photo of Julia working with her computer at a café. She has short blonde hair, wearing big green earrings, writing on a laptop. On the table in front of her is a cup of tea and a notebook and pen.

Today, we can look back and see how social media has been used to spark movements of positive change. Young people from around the world have been inspired to join protests against racial injustice and women's rights. They've held global and national leaders accountable in the midst of a climate crisis - a lot thanks to social media.

Even Girls' Globe has social media to thank for its early growth back in 2013. Yet, in a post-me-too world that's only beginning to recover from a pandemic, we can also see how social media has been detrimental for personal wellbeing, democracy and human rights.

So, it makes sense to ask. Can you be a feminist and STILL use social media?
